The most important macroelements are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), which are often indicated by the acronym NPK. Other macroelements are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S).

Microelements are the nutrients that plants require in smaller amounts, but that are essential for the well-being and quality of the plants, as they intervene in numerous metabolic, enzymatic and hormonal processes.

The most important microelements are iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), boron (B), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and chlorine (Cl). Other microelements are nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se), etc.
